Through my experience with Xbox Live, I was able to understand why people would be interested in joining that community. I call it a community because that is the only word that really demonstrates how people share the space and remain connected because of it. Though it costs money to remain connected to this community, I believe that many would agree with me when I say that it is worth it. It’s not just for the ability to improve skill with games by playing with strangers; it’s worth it because it allows you to play with your friends and family. It helps to keep you connected and sometimes even strengthen those bonds of friendship.
Through my encounter with Xbox Live, I was able to experience first-hand how that space can be interpreted as a place because of the social meaning and values that are encoded when you use it. Many people use Xbox Live specifically as a social space so that they can stay connected to their friends. Facebook may be free but Xbox Live makes it a little more personal because of its video and chat capabilities. If you still are not convinced that’s okay because Xbox Live allows you to go on Facebook too.
I remember when I first joined Xbox Live and the displacement that I felt. Though I hadn’t left my room I experienced a culture shock. I didn’t have any social cues to tell me how to act or behave when interacting with the other people on Xbox Live, I remember feeling confused and even a little scared because of this. Eventually I was able to get over this shock and become part of the community and try to understand the culture as thoroughly as I could. I learned how to use the features and do so proficiently so that I could get the full experience.
Another shock was the realization of the true amount of people who are part of this Xbox Live community. Of course some don’t use it as often as others, but many use it as a means to stay connected to friends and family if they are not able to be with them physically. I used to stay in contact with my friends using Facebook, but now I prefer to use Xbox Live because not only can I talk to them, but I can also play games with them, just like it once was before everyone went off to college.
Through this blog and my own experiences with Xbox Live I have come to realize that not only does Xbox Live make sense, it is an important aspect in many people’s lives. In a way it is a social network, it might not be exactly like Facebook, but it still allows people to interact and keep those relationships alive. The only conclusion that I have about Xbox Live is that it is just one of those things where you don’t realize how good it is until you have tried it yourself. After that it’s all over, you never want to go back to the way it was. I myself question how I was able to enjoy videogames without Xbox Live. Needless to say, I am planning on continuing my subscription.
